One of the God’s finest creations, CJD a.k.a Mad Cow Disease, fucks up your brains like gas huffing. Unpreventable, incurable and lethal within a month, it is contracted by misfolded prions, infected proteins, that further misfold proteins into prions. This continues until all the proteins in the brain are misfolded. Finally,  after having eaten all the proteins, your brains end up looking like a sponger.

Nothing says “I don’t really give a fuck about you” like a Christmas card that comes out of a box of twenty identical Christmas cards. Far worse is an ironic facebook status: “From Home to home, and heart to heart, from one place to another. The warmth and joy of Christmas, brings us closer to each other.” Being a man who suffers of fertility problems I especially hate those cutesy family Christmas cards with the whole family posing on the front: “Look at us, we’re breeding like bunnies while you can’t get your wife pregnant”

At our house, we have the same artificial tree we’ve had since I was a baby. And these days, you can buy an artificial tree that looks exactly like a real one. So why buy a real one? For the pine scent? (Go out and sniff a pine cone, asshole.) For the joy of vacuuming pine needles off the rug every day? What?? I don’t get it. And then, after New Year’s Day, you see the most depressing thing ever: all the dead, rejected trees sitting out on the sidewalk, waiting to be taken to the dump. Mutilate a living thing, take it home, hang shit on it, then kick it to the curb.

People think of Santa Claus as jolly good fat fellow. In reality, he’s a prejudiced pedophile, bent on world domination. He sets a bad example the world over and promotes consumerism, communism, capitalism and obesity. He uses chimney to get to kids rooms secretly to give them candies, gifts and god knows what. Exactly the kind of creepy old man, my mom used to warn me about.
Christmas carols really annoy me. Song lyrics such as “he’s making a list, he’s checking it twice, he’s gonna find out who’s naughty and nice…” , sound like Nazi chants to me. And these are songs which children sing every day. Our children are growing up to be Hitler jugend. No wonder the right wing conservatism is repeatedly rising all over the western world.

Christmas presents are obvious proof of the racist nature of Christmas. You know how the “nice” little boys and girls will get presents at Christmas. Well, surprise, surprise, the nice ones are always the better-off ones. The richest 10% get 90% of the gifts, while the slum kids get to eat dust instead of turkey. This is yet another twisted message to the kids, representing western life-style and consumerism as good and eastern life-style and spiritual values as evil.

Even from an adult perspective the whole giving-and-getting thing is sick. When you exchange gifts with someone, you feel bad if the gift you gave them is cheaper than the gift they gave you, you also feel bad if it’s the reverse. “You don’t have to get me anything. Just as long as we can spend Christmas together.” This, let me tell you, is horseshit.

Every year, the “Festival for Fashion and Photography” assembles the international high fashion scene in Vienna. Right next to the glossy catwalk, vendors from developing countries make a living with fake brand goods on Austria’s largest flea market. A local inspection.

An acrid stench of cheap Asian plastic goods crosses the parking lot of the Vienna “Naschmarkt”. At the adjacent hotdog stands, homeless people quietly drink their Schnaps, while masses of people are passing them in the humid morning air. Tarik* flutters frantically around his stall, has no time for long conversations. Time is money. On a highly frequented Saturday like this the 28-year-old is under pressure. Today the Indian is one of 220 dealers at the biggest flea market in Austria. Between trashy polyester Dirndls and 3-D images with cats motifs, sloppy stitched “Messi” jerseys with crumby UNICEF print and designer belts with strange fonts on the metal buckles are also found in the range of the cheap goods seller. “This type sells very well,” says Tarik, who has been in the country for
twelve years, in broken German. He himself does not wear his clothes. “Poor quality”, he remarks with a grin. His company manufactures in India and Pakistan. “Like the others, just that the things there are still expensive,” defends the plagiarism dealer. His offers range from a pair of sunglasses, the least expensive item on the stand with five euros, to women’s bags, which are most expensive with 20 euros. But Tarik takes his liberties with the prices. The father of three children has to feed a large family in India. In times of mass production there is heavy competition. He takes what he can get.

At the same time and just minutes away, international representatives from the Fashion world meet for the nine-day “Festival for Fashion and Photography”. In the pompous Palais Schönburg Imran Amed, Editor in Chief of The Business of Fashion Internet platform, has invited two apparel companies from the luxury segment for a fashion talk. The panelists took the time to present their business models, discuss the future of the Western fashion industry in times of globalization, and strategies against low-cost production. For the Belgian investor Anne Chapelle money plays no role. Their high-class brands such as Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann produce entirely by hand. “Commerce destroys creativity. You can’t buy any good brands for less money, “criticizes the entrepreneur and sips on her miniature Vöslauer water bottle.

Dangerous greed

Meanwhile, the midday sun beats down on the Naschmarkt. Everywhere people rummage, bargain and buy. A sweaty, old man with a sombrero unloads a cart full of clothing bags on his stand. Immediately a crowd forms around him. The 27-year-old Huseyin, who pushes three bulging bags of flea market goods in a dilapidated baby carriage in front of him, takes an interested look. “I shop here because it’s cheap,” the Turkish father notices while his eyes cast down. As a skilled shoemaker, he did not find a job in Austria, now working for a few euros in a large cleaning company.

“If you sell a T-shirt for three euros, someone else is paying the price for it”, the Berlin fashion designer Kostas Murkudis points out in the Palais Schönburg. Well into the evening, the participants philosophize in a nice atmosphere about “brand prostitution”, sustainability and fair trade labels in fashion until the air in the room is used up. Time is luxury. Time to go.

What colour should our front door be? Are we proud and passionate about the society we have built?   On what rock do we sit? Sadly the Nation has not seen much leadership or example from its elected representatives for years, and in consequence has lost any visionary sense of direction.    By the same token so many good people are also without a sense of purpose – empty consumerism filling the void where the soul should be. Whatever Government is in power it must make its priority to spur us to spot and to follow that guiding star both as a Nation, as well as within ourselves.  Whether we are of faith or no faith it doesn’t matter; healthy minded humans need to have a goal and use the short time given to us on earth trying to reach it.    

The reality in so many cases is that - people are caught up in a greedy clamour for “More, More, More!”    This is both unsustainable and unacceptable as it implies not only the unhealthy reliance on ill-funded credit, but also the exploitation and plunder of the resources of the developing world.   Would it not make sense if Governments and Church Leaders, and even atheist philosophers, begin the radical reforms so necessary in our society by tackling soul-less materialism and  try to win us round to think “Enough, is enough”?  I have no problem with great wealth; it can bring great benefits – but I do have a problem with great poverty  -and the chasm between the developed and the developing worlds, between the greedy and the grateful in our own society, will continue to gape ever wider if vote-anxious politicians dishonestly continue to pander to the mass demand for “More, More, More!” when their exhortation to the Nation should be “‘enough’ is enough!”

Is British Parliamentary Democracy TRULY democratic?

-until men and women come forward as candidates who put public service before career, honour before cash…

 -until the environment of Parliament encourages MPs to be guided in their speaking and voting by conscience rather than Party preferment or raw determination to hang on to their second- home- duck- house life-style (turning them into virtual voting cabbages)…

- until Parliament itself has the guts reassert it’s sovereignty and throw out diktats and orders from beyond our borders  which are alien to the good governance of Great Britain…

- and until all sides are heard in Parliament – not just the tired voices of Labour, Lib-Dem and Conservative…

Then the answer is….. 

………that British Parliamentary Democracy is far from being democratic.  Until MPs represent People before Party, displaying the widest possible spectrum of views in Parliament, and until that Parliament is seen not to have thrown away its power to govern to an unelected, irremovable and undemocratic power beyond our shores, and has therefore in reality become a sham, able to make unilateral decisions only on foxhunting and MPs pensions, until that day arrives popular support for Parliament, respect for MPs, and our motivation to participate in the affairs of our own Country will evaporate: after all, what’s the point?

Common sense could save the day, as follows -

(i)                     Constituencies should be free to select their PPC from their own list:   Central Office ‘approved’ lists should be disallowed.

(ii)                     Secret voting on all debates in Parliament.   Voting record to be made public before reselection at the following General Election.  This will help to diminish the often Machiavellian influence of the Whips.

(iii)                   10% extra seats for small party and independent candidates – otherwise ‘all sides’ will never be heard.   This would mean that about 60 constituencies would have 2 MPs – the ‘official’ MP being the ‘first past the post’ winner.

(iv)                    Reduce backbench MPs pay to £1000 per week – quite handsome I’d have thought.  ‘Enough’ is enough: it’s  said, ‘if you pay peanuts you get monkeys’ – but I say,’ if you pay big peanuts you get big monkeys’:  just cast an eye over some those sitting in comfort on the green or the red benches in Parliament and test my claim.

(v)                      Disallow ALL MPs expenses – INSTEAD give MPs a plastic card (like the Police) which would enable them to travel FREE anywhere in the UK by public transport at any time.   First class if available.

(vi)                    Build or convert a site close to the Palace of Westminster creating say 400 one bedroom flatlets for non-commuter belt MPs who need to spend time in London.  They could have a flat FREE of charge on application. (10 years ago I suggested that the former GLC Building across the Thames would have been ideal).

(vii)                    £200 per week would be allowed for constituency secretarial/research assistance – and freedom to employ who they want:  family or non family.

(viii)                  FREE access to secretarial/research pool at Westminster

(ix)                      SUBSIDISED food within the Palace of Westminster

The Welfare State

Government micromanagement of our daily lives is very unhealthy. The aim of State Welfare should simply be to create as level a playing field as possible, letting people take responsibility for their own lives……

- so that the young get the very best start in life possible

- so that the long-term sick get the best care possible

-  so that the unemployed can live productively while they find work

-so that the elderly can live decently whatever their fortunes or misfortunes in life may have been

- and so that students in Further Education – the hope of the     Nation tomorrow – are given every support and not put into long term debt

 Dr Beveridge’s visionary Welfare State (the ‘safety net’ below which no one in a civilised society should fall) is 60 years past its sell-by date so…

(i)                          Scrap the DSS and Welfare System as it stands in its entirety and start again

(ii)                        Replace it with a Citizen’s Income of £240 per week Plus Worthwhile Occupation scheme (CI plus WO) and let recipients budget independently.  This new-found independence would strike a positive blow against a debilitating dependency culture which is already tragically breeding a growing under-class.   (£240 per week is the Government’s own official ‘poverty line’ minimum, so why only hand out less than £100 pw Job Seekers Allowance and force the unemployed to scrounge and lie to get a living dole out of a plethora of incomprehensible Benefits?)   The Citizens’ Income would be automatic and would not be means tested so that all but a skeleton of the entire bureaucratic structure, its staff, its real estate and its mountain of printed forms would be scrapped overnight.  Receipt of the CI however would be dependent on the recipient doing a full-time Government approved Worthwhile Occupation (q.v(v) below)

(iii)                        The long-term sick would receive more rigorous personal assessment but if qualified could now be entitled to greatly increased extra benefit as per needs

(iv)                       In addition to receiving a Citizens’ Income, FE Students would have  all their tuition fees  paid in full – bringing an immediate end to Student Loans and the disgrace of students starting off life in debt

(v)                         The Unemployed would be offered full time Government approved Worthwhile Occupation in order to qualify for the CI ( £240 per week) but they would have time off for interviews for other work of their choice if they so wished.  Worthwhile Occupation (WO) could include – “Looking after your child/ren under16 years of age at home” – Government projects and public works – “Starting up your own Business”- VSO – proper Community Work etc etc.  As the work offered would be real and worthwhile many people might chose to stay on this CI plus WO system as a life-time choice:  and why not?   It would be valuable and valued work and recipients could hold their heads high.

last word– this brief document is not intended to be in any way a policy manifesto – but the myriad of policies needed for the radical revival of the UK have to spring from sound foundations:  the ideas suggested above would hopefully help to create those foundations.   If implemented, sacrifices would have to be made, so I doubt if my suggestions will be greeted with universal enthusiasm in some quarters!  However ‘sacrifice for the common good’, I suggest, is the order of the day.    If society is demonstrably unfair and failing to meet legitimate needs, and if democracy is demonstrably undemocratic, then British Parliamentary Democracy will quickly be seen to be humbug, and voting for MPs whose motive for being there in the first place is flawed, to sit in a Parliament that has no sovereign power, will be dismissed as a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Every profession has it’s sufferings. Managers have more strokes than the rest of us, alcoholism is common among restaurant workers, musicians do too much drugs and priests are tempted by pleasures of pedophilia.  Yes, you read it right, 100 priests in Belgium are now accused of more than 500 cases of pedophilia, just like their colleagues in Italy two years ago.

Pope himself has decided to defend his colleagues by blaming the society; ”the context of these times…. There is a market in child pornography that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society.”, he sais and continues referring to the 1970’s “pedophilia was theorized as something fully in conformity with man and even with children.” In this climate, the Catholic Church’s actions were merely reflecting the moral relativism of the times: “It was maintained — even within the realm of Catholic theology — that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself,” Benedict said. That is, church leaders weren’t sure if child sexual abuse was wrong, since secular society seemed to accept it (1).

Well back to today and Belgium. The church has taken action so that under a new code of conduct, men who enter a Belgian seminary will be subjected to regular psychological testing over their attitudes to sex and celibacy before being ordained as priests. Instead of putting the monsters to prison, the churches plan is to make them swear not to touch kids anymore, as if their vows meant anything before.

I have an even better solution, since the normal punishment practices don’t seem to apply on these holy fuck ups; instead of  harvesting priests for pedophiles, the seminary’s recruitment program should look for pedophiles in society, since they seem to make great priests. Pedophiles adapt better in churches than prison anyway.

There’s also another way to go. I suggest the society to take a similar attitude towards churches as it has taken towards another institution where child abuse is a daily practice, the clubs. Just like in the clubs, the entrance to churches should be forbidden from anyone under 18, and since the Jesus figures don’t seem to mean anything, they could just be replaced with condom automats. Also the wine should be substituted with whiskey, so that penetration wouldn’t hurt so much.
